Soapnuts, the truly environmentally friendly alternative to chemical laden laundry detergents. Soapnut shells are sustainably produced (they grow on trees), bio-degradable and compostable.

The soapnut tree or Sapindus Mukkrossi are native throughout India and Nepal, the shells have the active ingredient saponin and have been used for centuries as both a washing detergent and in skin care products.

To use Soapnuts for your laundry, simply place 6 – 8 half shells (or equivalent pieces) into the cotton bag provided. Place the bag in your washing machine and wash on your usual cycle. There is no need to add fabric conditioner as soapnuts leave your washing fresh, clean and soft.
The soapnuts can be re-used up to 5 times so between washes store the bag & nuts in a jar. When the soapnuts are exhausted they will appear darker and soft then all you need do is add them to your compost heap.

As they are natural and chemical free they are gentle on your clothes and skin so are suitable for people with sensitive skin. They are also economical costing about 3p per wash compared to 18p for conventional detergents.

Soapnuts have many more uses so if you want to know more please have a look at our Soapnut Information page.

Includes small cotton bag.

Soapnuts,

So far, so good. I've only used them half a dozen times but they seem just as good as conventional
powder. I'm really glad I've tried some at last after reading about them a couple of years ago.
I'm always looking for alternatives to chemicals for household use, and soapnuts fit the bill perfectly.
I can even put the used soapnuts on my compost heap!

I have to say that I was very dubious when I first about the alternatives to conventional washing powders, however, I have been pleasantly surprised at the results and will not go back to using the big branded washing powders.  My washing is much much softer and does not retain the residue left by the conventionals.  I live in a hard water area and normally use quite a lot of fabric softner but since using the soap nuts have virtually weaned myself of this also.  I have been converted and would highly recommend anyone thinking of changing to 'give them a go'.
