Newsletter Archive - September 2009

Welcome to the September Newsletter

It’s that time of year where many of us are preparing to send our younger ones on the venture back to school or college for another year amongst the books and lecture rooms!
Some people feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of the academic year because of all the new things they may experience; new friends, new teachers, new schools/colleges etc, but it doesn’t all have to be new?
Going back to school, college or uni, is the perfect time for adopting some greener habits which can last all year long.

·         Purchase Recycled - It’s unavoidable that you will have to buy some things for the upcoming school year but even Post-It notes are now available with a green option!
·         Opt for used books or use your library.
·         Swap or Sell – swap clothes with others in the school to save on uniform costs and sell what can’t be swapped.
·         Don't waste last year's unused paper! Tear it out and keep it in a folder for notes.

We have found the following article which lists some further ideas for a greener academic year.

http://blog.greenfinder.co.uk/2008/02/20/back-to-school-eco-tips

which includes facts such as that by walking to school / college / uni means that you arrive awake, alert and ready for the day ahead.  Apparently all schools are required to have travel plans by the year 2010 (2009 in London) which set out to encourage children to arrive at school by sustainable modes.

Another article we found which might also be of interest ;

Suggests that we should all inquire if our chosen school has a recycling program, and if the answer is yes, encourage children to understand the principals behind it & and how it works.

We hope that everyone returning to education this autumn has a wonderful experience and relish all their endeavours!

Did you know......

Despite the potential to recycle or compost around 68% of our waste, we are only recycling or composting 15%. WRAP

Top Tip

To remove bad smells from your fridge cut a lemon in half and leave it inside, or put some bicarbonate of soda in a bowl & leave in the fridge to absorb the smells.

Sorry.....
Apologies for the late arrival of this months newsletter but we had a mini drama involving a large amount of water & an office ceiling that decided it wanted to become a floor! We are slowly drying out & are back to business as usual.
